Liverton Networks Completes Nationwide Wi-Fi Upgrade at Massey University

28/08/25, 12:00 am

High-speed, reliable Wi-Fi is now a reality across Massey University’s student accommodation halls.

Liverton is proud to announce the successful completion of a nationwide Wi-Fi upgrade across Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University’s student accommodation halls. This ambitious project delivers unlimited 1 Gbps connectivity and enterprise-grade infrastructure to more than 1,500 students, transforming the way they connect, study, and live across campuses in Auckland, Manawatū, and Wellington New Zealand.

Why Connectivity Matters for Student Life

University life today is as digital as it is physical. From online lectures and research to social interaction, entertainment, and maintaining family connections, reliable connectivity is no longer a “nice to have” — it is the backbone of student life.

For Massey students living on campus, Wi-Fi is not only the gateway to academic resources but also a vital link to whānau and friends. The shift towards blended learning, video conferencing, and cloud-based collaboration has increased expectations for seamless, always-on access. At the same time, the sheer number of connected devices in a single hall — laptops, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and streaming devices — creates enormous pressure on older networks.

Recognising these realities, Massey University made a strategic decision to completely modernise its student accommodation networks. In late 2024, Liverton Networks was selected through a competitive process as the trusted partner to deliver a full-scale replacement.

Delivering a Nationwide Upgrade

The project’s scope was extensive: replace legacy networks in multiple campuses with enterprise-grade Wi-Fi and ISP infrastructure capable of handling heavy usage and future growth.

Liverton Networks brought together a robust technology stack built on Ruckus Wi-Fi Access Points and CommScope switching and cabling, supplied via its Tier 1 partnership with Ruckus across Australia and New Zealand. The decision to use enterprise-grade hardware ensured resilience, high performance under load, and the flexibility to adapt as student needs evolve.

The rollout included:

  • Installation of hundreds of Ruckus APs across all accommodation halls.

  • Enterprise switching infrastructure to support high-capacity backhaul.

  • A dedicated 1 Gbps unlimited ISP service for every student, included in rent.

  • High-speed public area networks, ensuring students, staff, and visitors can remain connected in shared spaces.

  • Centralised management and monitoring to keep the network secure and optimised.

Liverton Networks worked closely with Massey University’s IT and accommodation teams to plan and execute the deployment with minimal disruption. Rigorous testing followed, ensuring performance standards were met before students returned to campus.

Student-Centred Outcomes

While the technical achievements are impressive, the true success of this project lies in the impact on students.

Seamless Learning

Students now have uninterrupted access to digital learning platforms, video lectures, and collaborative tools. The network easily supports multiple devices per user and handles heavy bandwidth requirements such as video streaming and large file downloads.

Wellbeing and Social Connection

Fast, reliable Wi-Fi supports more than academics. For students living away from home, video calls with loved ones are vital to wellbeing. The new network makes it easier for students to stay connected to friends, family, and support networks without interruption.

Digital Equity

Every student receives the same high-quality service, included in their rent. This levels the playing field, ensuring no one is disadvantaged by poor connectivity or additional costs for data.

Voices from the Project

Justin De Lille, CEO of Liverton Group, commented on the milestone:
"We are thrilled to partner with Massey University and to be entrusted with providing essential Wi-Fi services that will support their student academic environment. This contract allows for a complete replacement of all student networks with new enterprise grade hardware that is able to handle high demand, streaming and video calling under a high connection environment. We look forward to providing Massey with a world class Wi-Fi network.”
Dr Tere McGonagle-Daly, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Students and Global Engagement at Massey University, emphasised the value for the student experience:
“Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University is committed to providing an exceptional experience for our students, and seamless digital connectivity is fundamental to their academic and personal success. Through our partnership with Liverton, we are enhancing the quality and reliability of our Wi-Fi infrastructure across all campuses, ensuring students can access learning resources, connect with peers and their whānau, and fully engage with campus life. This upgrade reflects our ongoing investment in technology to support innovative teaching, learning, and wellbeing initiatives for our students.”

A Partnership for Performance

Collaboration was central to this project’s success. By working in partnership with Ruckus Networks and CommScope, Liverton Networks was able to deliver a resilient, scalable infrastructure built to meet enterprise demands.

Ruckus Wi-Fi technology is designed for dense, high-load environments like student halls, where hundreds of devices compete for bandwidth. Its advanced traffic management and interference-mitigation features mean students experience consistent performance, even at peak times. CommScope hardware further ensures the backbone of the network is robust, secure, and capable of scaling for future needs.

More Than a Technology Upgrade

The project demonstrates that digital infrastructure is about more than technology — it’s about enabling people.

  • Students gain confidence that their connection will work, reducing stress around online exams, deadlines, and video calls.

  • Staff benefit from reliable Wi-Fi in shared spaces, making it easier to connect with students and deliver services.

  • By embedding connectivity into the student experience, Massey is also future-proofing its ability to deliver blended learning, online support, and wellbeing initiatives.

Looking Ahead

For Liverton Networks, the completion of this project is part of a broader vision to advance digital infrastructure across New Zealand’s education sector.

Educational institutions face unique challenges: large campuses, dense populations of users, and rapidly evolving digital demands. Liverton Networks is committed to helping universities and schools overcome these challenges with enterprise-grade solutions tailored to the needs of students, staff, and communities.

Justin De Lille notes:
“This project is more than an upgrade — it’s a platform for innovation. By investing in resilient, high-capacity networks, universities can unlock new opportunities for learning, wellbeing, and engagement. Liverton Networks is proud to play a part in shaping that future.”
